His Story

Earl Manning III is a Virginia-based photographer and visual storyteller whose work explores Black identity, generational memory, emotional vulnerability, and the quiet poetry of everyday life. Working primarily in black and white, Manning creates images that feel both archival and immediate—preserving cultural memory while examining love, loss, masculinity, legacy, and belonging. Rooted in Virginia’s 757 region, his practice is shaped by community, lineage, and the emotional landscapes of Black America.

His photographs function as visual essays—intimate yet expansive—centering Black subjects with tenderness and intention. Manning captures fathers holding daughters, couples navigating intimacy, young men suspended between boyhood and manhood, and elders whose faces carry decades of unspoken history. Influenced by the documentary sensitivity of Gordon Parks and the narrative rhythm of Jacob Lawrence, his work transforms subtle gestures and fleeting moments into lasting visual testimony.

Manning’s practice bridges fine art, public art, and cinematic collaboration. His work has been commissioned for billboard installations and murals by the city of Norfolk, bringing fine art into public space while reflecting the culture of the community. He has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning artists Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, documenting cultural moments such as the GIANTS exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. His photography has also been featured at institutions including the Hermitage Museum & Gardens, the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.
